Seriously Outdoors’ owner Glen Bason knows a thing or two about the outdoors. Before taking over the hunting and fishing store from previous owners, Ken and Gill McCann, Glen was a well-regarded builder throughout the Waikato region.
Come rain, hail or shine, Glen spent close to 18 years working in the elements on building sites large and small.
He started his building career straight out of high school after spending his school holidays helping his father, also a builder.
It didn’t take long for Glen to realise that building was what he wanted to do, so in 1997 he began an apprenticeship in Whitianga which he completed in Hamilton in 2000.
During this time, Glen also managed large format retail stores like Kmart, Farmers, Animates as well as Colorado and Hallensteins.
Seriously Outdoors marks a turning point for Glen. After years of heavy lifting and straining, Glen’s health took a turn.
He knew it was time to pivot from building back into retail, so when Seriously Outdoors became available, Glen jumped at the chance.

Seriously Outdoors is a small town store that is kiwi owned and operated. It was first opened by outdoors fanatic Ken and fitness guru Gill McCann in May 2001. The business started its life as The Big Outdoors Experience but went through a rebranding programme in 2008 to more closely reflect the specialist nature of its retail offering.
New owner, Glen Bason, is keen to build on the fantastic reputation the business has throughout the community.
For Glen, Taumarunui is ripe for adventure. With its mountains, lakes, rivers, thermal pools and coastline, it has so much to offer new and experienced adventurers. His aim is to provide you with the best retail experience possible so that your time outdoors is memorable for the right reasons.
